WASHINGTON – Falls from elevation continue to be the leading cause of construction worker fatalities, emphasizing the critical need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to protect the safety and health of workers. In response to this alarming trend, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced its 11th National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction from May 6-10.

What is the National Safety Stand-Down?

The National Safety Stand-Down is an annual event led by OSHA in partnership with Construction Safety Week, a coalition of over 40 national and global construction firms. The primary objective of this initiative is to encourage employers across the construction industry to halt their operations on May 8 and engage in discussions on working safely at elevation. This concerted effort aims to facilitate the largest-ever, industry-wide construction stand-down to address fall hazards effectively.

How Can Employers Participate?

The Department of Labor is urging construction industry employers nationwide to actively participate in the National Safety Stand-Down on May 8 and promote a culture of safety throughout the year. Employers are encouraged to share their Stand-Down experiences on social media using the hashtag #StandDown4Safety to raise awareness and inspire others to prioritize safety in the workplace.
